Writing an illustration essay is a great way to expand your creativity. There are many different types of essays, but this type of essay is one that focuses on an idea or topic by using visuals. In other words, the focus is on creating a visual art piece (or picture) and writing about it.
This type of essay can be used in creative writing, education, personal expression, and as a portfolio piece. It’s important to keep in mind that just because you are working with images doesn’t mean you should sacrifice your voice and story; it’s still important to have text in your essay.
First, get inspired! Then, choose a topic for which you want to write about and plan out your process. Next, start drawing! Once your drawing is finished, transcribe the text over top of the drawing so that it appears to be written within it. Finally, revise and polish up your work! Here’s my step-by-step guide on how.
Get inspired
To write an illustration essay, start by looking around your home or classroom. It’s not necessary to be in a creative space to get inspiration, but it will make the process easier. Look at different things that you see and think about how they could relate to your topic.
Take a look around your home for examples of objects that may inspire you. If you have a computer at home, take a look at your desktop background or photos on your phone. If you’re more comfortable drawing with paper and pencil, grab a piece of paper and some colored pencils and sketch out ideas for images that relate to your topic on paper.
The idea is just to get your creative juices flowing! Once you have ideas floating around in your head, start thinking about how each one relates to the overall idea of what you are trying to write about.
Choose a topic for which you want to write about
Choose a topic you would like to write about. It could be a personal experience, an event that happened in your life, or something that has happened to someone else.
For example, you might have seen a wild animal and wanted to write about the experience of seeing it for the first time or maybe read about how climate change is affecting the earth in an article and want to write about what you learned from it.
Plan out your process

Start drawing!
This is a great exercise to help you find your creative voice and get started withdrawing.
The first step is to brainstorm about the topic you want to write about, or for which you want to create an illustration. What are some things that are happening on that topic, and what do you think it would be really cool if someone could illustrate?
Next, it’s time to sketch out your ideas! Pick out a few words/concepts that you want to convey with your drawing and make quick sketches of them. You can draw on anything–a napkin, a piece of paper, whatever–that will allow you to quickly figure out how many different angles there are in which your idea can be illustrated.
As soon as you decide what your idea is, start drawing! It doesn’t need to be perfect at this point–just get the shape down! If it’s easier for you, try doodling with a pencil or pen on a piece of paper instead of drawing directly on the paper. This will help avoid mistakes and give you more freedom when moving on to the final draft later. If this sounds hard for now, try it again when you’re more confident in your skills
Here’s an example of what I’ve done
Transcribe the text over the top of the drawing so that it appears to be written within it.
The following is the text that appears on top of the drawing.

Revise and polish up your work!
First, brainstorm your topic. Let’s say you want to write about the importance of love in relationships.
Once you’ve chosen your topic, start drawing! Start by choosing an interesting detail of your topic that you want to focus on and experiment with some shapes and colors to get a feel for it.
Next, transcribe the text over top of the drawing so that it appears to be written within it. This will make the finished product look more polished and give your work depth.
Finally, revise and polish up your work! Once you’ve reached a point where you think it’s ready for publication, go through a quick revision process (go back through your text and add or remove words or sentences as necessary) before finalizing the piece and submitting it for critique.
