TikTok has ushered in a new generation of digital stars. But for many creators, it can be difficult to make money on TikTok alone.
Unlike YouTube or Facebook, TikTok doesn’t share ad revenue with influencers, which distribute a portion of ad revenue to eligible users. Instead, TikTok launched a creation fund to pay for videos for users with at least 100,000 followers.
Some TikTokers told Insider that while Creator Fund payments aren’t calculated based on views, valid payments for videos are worth a few cents per thousand video views.
Personal finance influencer Preston Seo, who has 1.6 million TikTok followers, made about $1,664 in total from the Creator Fund between January 2021 and May 2021, according to documents he shared with Insider. His TikTok account makes an average of $9 to $38 a day.

One of the most popular ways to make money as a TikToker is to promote songs in your videos. Music marketers and record labels regularly pay TikTok users to post on the app in an attempt to make new songs go viral.
TikTok creators Nicole, Natalie and Nika Taylor, who have more than 8 million followers on the app, told Insider that it costs $750 to promote a song in one video, $1,400 for two and $2,000 for three.
For micro-influencers with fewer followers, rates vary more, but can range from $20 to $150, said Austin Georges, a senior account manager focused on music marketing at Genz Media Company FLighthouse.
