Many candidates these days seem to be interested in doing FRCPath in Histopathology. The objective is to secure a good-paying job in the country or abroad. This is achieved through the postgraduate qualification route. FRCPath can be termed to be a sub-specialty exam conducted to identify eligible and talented candidates. It is considered to be one of the most preferred qualifications as well as GMC recognized PG program.

Eligibility criteria

Those interested to sit for the FRCPath sub-specialty exam need to first undergo the frcpath histopathology course from a well-established institution. But then, they need to have certain qualifications to be eligible to sit for this exam. The exam is generally designed to recognize talented histopathologists on successful completion of the training program. They are those who can demonstrate sufficient technique and knowledge for independent practice.

Part 1 and Part 2 Eligibility

Eligible candidates are to sit for both the Part 1 and Part 2 exams and qualify in it in good grades. Doing so helps demonstrate their technique and ability to carry out independent practice after earning the certification! They can also become a successful consultant. Qualifying Part 1 exam

To sit for the part 1 exam, it is necessary to get trained in a Histopathology training program for a time frame of about 12 months and not less. On successfully qualifying the Part 1 exam in Histopathology, candidates are to undergo proper FRCPath histopathology online course from a premier institution. Once the course is completed, they are eligible to sit for the Part 2 exam. They may opt for any of the given below like Paediatric Pathology, Neuropathology or Forensic Pathology.

Qualifying Part 2 Exam

Candidates are required to undergo specialty training for a period of three years. It should be specific to Histopathology. The experts also suggest candidates to attempt the second part a year after qualifying Part 1 and not before. This will allow them to be better prepared for the exam and get good grades.

Format and Structure

The exam is generally conducted in two different parts, namely:

  • 1st Part: One paper comes with a total of 125 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions). Generally EMQs and SBAs.
  • 2nd Part: Six Part Practical exams are head in two consecutive days.

1st Part Exam details

This exam has 125 MCQs in both EMQs (Extended Matching Questions) and SBAQs (single best answer) type. This exam is more orientated towards evaluating the candidates overall understanding and knowledge gained in the following:

  • Full autopsy practice range undergone at the district general hospital.
  • Basic science with focus in pathology inclusive of molecular biology.
  • Cytopathology/Histopathology

2nd Part Exam details

This part comprises of six components that are taken in two days. It comprises of the following:

  • Cytopathology: 8 cases, 20 min. slots
  • Surgical history: 20 cases, 20 min. slots
  • OSPEs: Two 20 min. stations
  • Macroscopic pathology: Four cases, 20 min. reviews and 20 min. discussions.
  • Frozen sections: Six cases, in two, 20 min. stations and 1 meeting of 20 min. station with examiners.

It is important for all candidates to be updated with eligibility criteria and exam requirements. Only then can they avail and complete the course as well as qualify it in flying colours.
